Vertical axis wind turbines: With particular emphasis on self-acting variable pitch Darrieus type turbines $83.51 Vertical axis wind turbines or VAWTs have some advantages compared to the better known horizontal axis turbines or HAWTs. VAWTs based on the Darrieus rotor principle are more efficient and economical than the Savonius type, but fixed pitch Darrieus VAWTs lack starting torque. This can be overcome with variable pitch blades, but active pitch control is complex and impracticable for stand-alone, no… |

Wind Mills, How Do They Differ?
There are several different types of windmills out there and it is hard to know which one would be a great fit for your location. There are so many different ones you can go with and it all depends on where your property is situated. So what are the different windmills out there to choose from? First, we will seperate them into two distinct categories, horizontal and vertical axis.
Horizontal axis windmills are your typical windmills that are designed with one to twenty blades that sit up high on a tower. These are created to have all of its equipment installed high in the air where the tower is located. That is the spot where it gathers all of its energy and then sends it down the tower to a generator to store the energy for when it is ready to be used. Horizontal axis windmills consist of three major types. They are the classical modern wind turbine, horizontal Darrieus wind turbine, and the pumping wind turbine. To start with, the classical modern wind turbines are the windmills you would see in the typical wind farms on the side of the road. These windmills usually consist of 1-3 blades that rotate around to gain its energy. The Horizontal Darrieus wind mill is distinct by 6 blades being connected to it. The pumping wind turbine is a wind turbine with twenty blades. All three types of wind turbines are created in a way that must be pointed in the wind to be useful.
Vertical axis windmills are less common. These windmills are created in a way to have blades going from the bottom of the mill to the top. This enables the blades on the wind turbine to turn when the wind blows from any direction. This gives the vertical axis wind turbine a large advantage over the horizontal axis.. There are five major types vertical axis windmills, which are aerofoil, windside, vertical rotor, helical, and Savonius wind mill. The Savonius and the vertical rotor wind turbines are going to look similar with having 2-3 blades that twist vertically. The windside wind turbine has two blades with material between the blade and tower giving it a look of a rolled up flag rotating. The helical wind turbine is designed to have 3 blades connected from the top to the bottom of the tower slanted at different angles. The aerofoil wind turbine is designed with ten blades. The ten blades are located on a tower and spin vertically on top of it.
As you can see there are several different types of windmills that have been designed over the years. As technology expands people are able to start producing wind mills that make electricity with minimum amount of wind. As it stands today, there are windmills that can make electricity with just 6 mph wind speeds! This will give people a chance to get out of relying on the electric company and start producing their energy for free!
