An Overview of Solar Water Heater Industry in India

The global market of non-conventional energy resources has witnessed a rise in demand of solar water heaters. A solar Water Heater makes use of renewable source of energy and this makes it a widely accepted choice in various countries like China, Australia, India and the countries of European Union.

India currently has low solar heater consumption when compared to the countries like China. However, the growth rate of the sales of these devices is worth taking a note. Consumers from residential as well as industrial areas are getting attracted towards the use of solar heaters. Here is a discussion about the demand and use of solar water heaters in India.

It was in the year 1982 that the Department of Non-conventional Energy Sources was formed in India that led to the introduction of solar heaters and other Alternative Energy sources. However, the solar water heater popularity in the country increased in the mid 90s. The annual growth rate of these devices between 1995 and 2000 was around 8 percent. Also, more than 80 percent of the consumers belonged to the industrial and commercial sectors.

The annual growth rate of solar water heaters increased to 20.6 percent during the time period between 2001 and 2004 and it further increased to over 24 percent from 2004 to 2008. Starting from 2001, the number of residential users of these devices increased significantly.

However, the solar water heater consumption in India is disappointingly low as compared to the other countries. As per the reports of 2008, over 65 percent of the total solar water heater capacity was utilized by China. This places China at the top of the list of the countries that currently use these Alternative Energy devices. The figure was chased by the European Union whose usage of total solar water heating capacity was over12 percent. Turkey, Japan and Israel are other countries who had individual significant shares. The India’s share in solar water heating capacity use was only 1.2 percent.

In China, the residential usage of solar water heaters dominates the market. More than 10 percent of the total households in the country make use of Solar Energy utilized by these solar heaters. Nearly 98 percent of the annual sales of these heaters in the country is contributed by the residential consumers. The country has set the target to extend the solar heater reach up to 30 percent of the total households in the next 10 years.

As per the 2009 report, 80 percent of the total sales of solar water heaters in the year were made to the residential consumers. The hotel owners had the share of 6 percent in the total sales of solar water heaters. Around 6 percent of these devices were sold to the industrial consumers and about 3 percent to the hospitals.

Growth in urban housing and improvement in the supply chain of solar water heaters are the two main reasons for the growth in their demand in the country. With the cumulative annual growth rate of nearly 17 percent from 1995 to 2008, the solar water heater industry in the country is growing in different sectors.
