Using Solar Panels For Electricity

There are different types of Solar Power; solar thermal power is used to produce heat for air and water, etc. and solar photovoltaic power is used to produce electricity. The solar panel or, photovoltaic panel, is natural silicon and is charged with electricity when it is directed toward sunlight. Geographically speaking, we have a north and south hemisphere and the panels must be facing south in the northern hemisphere and north in the southern hemisphere, when they are to be installed and you must also take into consideration the seasons.

An electric charge is collected in the panel and converted to DC voltage of about 24 volts. We normally use 12 to 17 volts in our homes. There is generally a difference between the voltage reference and the actual voltage. To give you an example of the strength of Solar Energy; if you were to put one hundred square feet of Solar Panels in the southwestern United States you could provide power to the entire country.

In summary, there are four basic components used to bring 120 volt electricity to your home; the solar panels, charge controller, battery, Charge Regulator and inverter. The solar panels charge the battery and the Charge Regulator makes sure the battery is charged properly, the battery in turn sends DC voltage to the inverter, which converts the DC voltage to AC voltage. If you need 240 volts AC, than you will need a transformer or, you can stack two identical inverters in order to do the job. This is a thumbnail sketch of how solar panels collect and disperse Solar Power to the home. However, the power of any system varies on its geographical location. If you live in the northwestern United States, you will need more solar panels than those people living in the southwestern United States.

For supplemental power one can build a Wind Turbine (wind mill), if the property it will be built on has a lot of wind, since the turbine’s efficiency is dependent entirely on wind. There is some suggestion that the panels and the turbine can be used in tandem to bring electrical power into a home.
