The Two Inescapable Factors of Weight Loss
Weight loss is a simple function of calories taken in and calories burned by metabolism and exercise. The general recommendation given by physicians and dieticians is that you need to burn about 3500 calories in order to lose a pound of fat. Similarly, if you eat 3500 excess calories you will gain a pound of fat. The two methods that can be used to burn calories are diet and exercise; in a sensible weight loss plan, both must be combined for you to see the most rapid amount of weight loss.
Keep in mind that your body naturally burns a certain amount of calories each day in order to stay alive; this is called your basal metabolic rate. Your basal metabolic rate is influenced by both your degree of activity and your current weight. The more you weigh, the more calories your body has to burn each day. Muscle requires more calories expended per day for your body to maintain it than fat does, so don’t neglect strength training to meet your weight loss goals.
Exercise can greatly accelerate your weight loss in two different ways. Firstly, cardiovascular exercise is a great way to burn calories. Your body will use the food you eat as fuel so that you can continue exercising, resulting in less calories being stored as fat. Secondly, exercising boosts your body’s metabolism, causing it to burn more calories that day in general. The best way to obtain the maximum fat burning potential of exercise is to exercise in the morning, about thirty minutes after you first wake up.
If you exercise on an empty stomach, it’s even better for the purposes of boosting your metabolism, as your body will be forced to burn fat stores in order to provide fuel for you to exercise. This activates lipolysis, the scientific name for when fat stores in your body are converted into fuel for you to use. The lipolysis that you start in the morning can continue well later into the day, making your body more likely to burn fat for energy instead of store it as adipose tissue.
What happens in the kitchen is the greatest factor in weight loss – even if you exercise religiously, you can easily undo all your hard work with a binge eating spree of unhealthy foods. It’s much easier – and much more fun – to put on excess calories than to burn them off. Most people would probably prefer eating half of an entire molten chocolate cake instead of exercising on an elliptical walker for half an hour.
